During this summer’s series of heat waves, the San Francisco Examiner featured San Francisco Homeless Outreach Team (SFHOT) Outreach Specialist Ventrell Johnson and Program Manager Jose Torres in a story about how outreach workers provide additional resources to the city’s vulnerable homeless population on hot days.
The story mentions how SFHOT, a partner of Heluna Health, increased the frequency of wellness checks, distributed water bottles and cooling packs, and assessed unhoused people in the city for heat-related illnesses during a particularly hot day.
In the article, Johnson highlighted the importance of checking on people who are living in tents or sleeping on sidewalks during the summer.
“When it’s hot, we’re paying a lot more attention to people lying around on the ground sleeping because they’re really out,” he said.
